Sunday in the Sun

Sunday morning the sky was brilliant blue and the sun was brightly shining. It was however a bit windy... Last week while driving by a Michaels Crafts, I stopped in and purchased 3 bottles of Setaolor Fabric Paint... I woke up Danielle, asked her if she would like fabric paint with me, who'd a thought she would actually jump out of bed with excitement!

This was our first attempt, The trees quickly covered our project in shade.

So for our second attempt, we moved to the front of the house and on the driveway. Here we had almost 1 hour of sun. By now it's 3PM.

Here are our final projects!

Danielle painted the blue/green/fuchsia and mine is the fuchsia/blue. After we were finished her next comment was can we dye our own fabric? This is so much fun!

Oh boy, what have I created? It started with her graduation project, I taught her how to thread paint, machine applique, machine quilt...she entered her quilt in the PNQE...and she won Best amateur Entry, Innovative, 2005.

"Live at Red Guitar", the guitar is all thread painted, the strings are couched cording, she used real buttons on the shirt.

I think we make a great team. But sometimes I wonder do I get my creativity from her or does she get it from me?

Light Cyan

you are lightcyan
#E0FFFF

Your dominant hues are green and blue. You're smart and you know it, and want to use your power to help people and relate to others. Even though you tend to battle with yourself, you solve other people's conflicts well.

Your saturation level is very low - you have better things to do than jump headfirst into every little project. You make sure your actions are going to really accomplish something before you start because you hate wasting energy making everyone else think you're working.

Your outlook on life is very bright. You are sunny and optimistic about life and others find it very encouraging, but remember to tone it down if you sense irritation.

The Fairy Princess and Cowboy Ben

My son Ben called me the Thursday, said he was having a problem finding parts for his Halloween costume. I told him I'd see what I could do. So on Friday, off to JoAnn Fabrics I went. While looking at patterns there was this adorable little girl, I'd guess she was about 4 years old. I asked her what she was going to be for Halloween, she proceeded to tell me all about her fairy princess costumes with wings. I told her my son wants to be a cowboy, she asked he how old he was, I replied oh, he's 22.

So here was his costume dilemma. Chaps. He wanted a pair of Chaps. So I thought , I can do this, after all what are Chaps, but legs of a pair pants held together by a belt. I found this great suede fabric with a fringe on one salvage. All their costume fabric was 70% off. So I paid less than $3 a yard for the first yard, $1.50 for the second...end of bolt discount. I purchased a unisex pajama pattern drew new lines for the front and back, cut my pattern out of Pellon Craft Bond, the suede was very flimsy and need some stiffener.

Ironed the Craft Bond to wrong side of fabric.

Added 1 inch to front and back curves, clipped curve sewed 2 rows stitching.

Top stitched the front to the back because of the fringe. Sewed the inseams...

I covered 1 inch webbing with 2 an 1/2 inches of suede using zig zag stitch added two lines for decoration, added D-rings.

There he is....Cowboy Ben!

I've Been Tagged - 20 Things About Me...

Mary Manahan, quiltstudio77, tagged me yesterday - it's now my turn to reveal 20 (insignificant or otherwise) things about myself in my blog... This may be hard but here goes in random order:

1. I am second in the birth order; I have an older brother, Earl, younger sister, Karen and younger brother, Scott.

2. I am the only one of my siblings who attended a private high school, an all girl's Catholic school. The year I was to enter high school, the city was desegregating all the high school, there were several riots and the city police patrolled the hallways with guns. Remember the Titans, yah it was sort of like that.

3. I was a Girl Scout. I remember doing lots of badges, selling cookies, going camping, our big bus trip to Washington D.C. funded by our cookie money!

4. I was a Girl Scout Leader, only Brownies.

5. I was a CYO cheerleader for basketball...rah rah

6. My first job was at a Burger King. I made Whoppers, hold the pickles, hold the lettuce, special orders don't upset us....

7. I used to ride the bus by myself, I think I was around 9 years old, for 10 cents, to go to the pool in the summer. I taught myself how to swim.

8. I can't sing...I have trained my hand to draw what my eyes see, but could never make my voice sing what my ears hear. What's up with that???

9. I once won $1000 from a radio contest. You had to listen all day for these 8 songs, then call in when they said to.

10. I used to love The Partridge Family..."I think I Love You, so what am I so afraid of...."

11. I've been to Europe 3 times. We went to Greece in 1979 for 16 days on our honeymoon. In 1998, we spent a week in Paris, Dan went for business, I tagged along. It was great, I toured Paris by day by myself, then went to dinner with 15 men each night. This July 2005, we went to London, two days after the first tube bomb. Also a business trip tag along. We even saw the Queen the day we went to watch the changing of the Guards....I have never even seen a U.S. President.....Mind the Gap.

12. In 1997 I torn my ACL, left knee. I was painting a bedroom, standing on a 5 gallon bucket...not as romantic as a sports injury but post surgery rehab was a real bitch.

13. I've been to Disneyland 3 times and Disney World once.

14. I used to work for Kodak. I won an employee photo contest and had my picture(me and the one I took) in the Kodakery, that's the company employee newspaper.

15. I was Photo Editor and a photographer of my high school yearbook.

16. I am currently retired, my last job was swim lesson manager at a health club. I managed approx. 40 instructors, 250-650 swim participants depending on what time of year it was. Now I stay home so I can spend time with my daughter, she's 17, college is fast approching!

17. I'm a procrastinator...enough said.

18. My favorite current TV shows are Lost, Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy.

19. I used to deliver the morning newspaper, only for 9 months...I took over my brothers route when he entered the Navy. I even went to a customers place of work, a car dealership, to collect what he owed me....His co-workers were all laughing, boy was he mad at me.

20. I have a new found passion, Art Quilts.

Hmmmm, who should I tag....Rayna at studio 78 notes.

Friday Night Lights...Swim...Bankrupt!

It's Friday Night...Are you ready for some Football! Well the Cheerleaders had fun in the rain. Our team lost by the way. The previous rainy night a few went "mud sliding" on the field after the game, oh what fun.

Saturday we went to other daughters college swim meet. The team lost but she had a personal best time for this time of year, in one of her events. So it was a good day. I see a losing trend here.

Saturday night, a tense game of Monopoly...We play where all "fees" go to Free Parking and if you land there you win the money. Well after hours of play, needless to say no one had won that money till Danielle did. She did us in by putting up Hotels on Boardwalk and Park Place, $2000 if you land there...Ouch. That did me in, then Dan landed on Chance...Advance to Boardwalk...He tried to pay it off by mortgaging all his properties without luck. So the "little one" wins.

Yesterday along with Mary I attended Rayna's workshop "Jump Start your Next Quilt" at the Quilt Connection in New Jersey. WOW, was is great! A little bit of pressure to create in short amounts of time but it really helps gets your creative ideas flowing.

I need to finish a few pieces I created and will post them later. What a morning...well I guess it started last night. Danielle arrives home after cheerleading practice, said she hurt her right hand doing a round-off-back-handspring. Well, it was a bit swollen, I gave her 2 Advil wrapped it with an ace bandage sent her to bed. This morning she had to take the bus to school, her car has manual transmission, she sends me a text message"Mom I got on the wrong bus" I figured she must be either hurting or Blonde! So I had to get dressed, drive to the wrong school, pick her up, then we decided to make a stop at the local hospital ER, sure enough her middle finger was broken. They splinted it, the middle finger no less, off to school she went. I hope she a good day.

I have several errand to run today, but I should have started earlier. The township is paving our cul-de-sac, there are several large pieces of machinery out there. Doesn't it always seem like you have to do something just because you can't?Guess I'll have to wait till later. Patience is a virtue?

I drew the partial face of Danielle. She was laying on the sofa with her hood up, this is all that showed of her face. Now I need to incorporate it with fabric.

Question of the Day

When working with Shiva paint sticks, how long do you typically wait before stitching? And, do you need to "fix" the fabric or "seal" it when you are done?

October Magic

Old Glory...I started this quilt I think it was 2002. The union is skyline fabric of NY City with the World Trade Center Towers and Statue of Liberty, surrounded by 13 machine embroidered stars. I finally got around to quilting it and binding it in September. I found a timeline, minute by minute of the events on September 11, typed it up with some AP Photos from that day, 8.5 x 11, ironed it onto fabric, sewed it to the back with the label, just a little bit history on the wall. Another UFO off the list...
Wow, its already 11pm and I feel like I've been at this computer all day! Many thanks to Mary M. and my son Luke and daughter Danielle with all their knowledge, and copy/paste, uploading photos to give them a URL ,to adding links, who'd a thought? I learned a lot today about html. All is well! Tomorrow is another day, I think it is an "Office Day". I have 8 shirts to embroider for Ben's boss, then back to quilting my UFO. Hopefully the rain will stop and sun will shine, but I doubt it, just wishful thinking.....

Our Family Hobby

This is our boat, MadamII. This photo was taken at the Thistle Nationals in August, sailing out of the Lavallette Yacht Club in New Jersey. Dan, Luke and Danielle are on the boat. It is a series of 7 races sailed over 5 days. They finished 5th in the President Fleet. 40 boats...There were 80 boats in regatta.

My Office

Annabelle Bowman...sewing up a storm. Several years ago when my children were small, I sewed clothes for Lizzie High and friends dolls from my home.
UFO revisited....
I've read several comments about is it an "old"quilt or "new"quilt, if you change an old one does that make it new again? I have always wondered that also. If I started this in 2001, but don't finish quilting or beading it till 2006, how old is it? When does a quilt become a quilt?

October 12

"Freestyle" my latest work...I just received more beads from Penny at TWE/Beads, the rest of her body will be "reflected" in beads. This is my daughter Beth, a competitive swimmer in college. When it's finished it may hang in her off campus apartment.

October 11, 2005 Happy Birthday Mom!

My first Barbie! Isn't she lovely?
It's amazing what a new dress and make up will do for a 42 year old doll.
